Teeth Grinding Treatment & Grinding Your Teeth, Brampton

What causes teeth grinding (bruxism)?

Teeth grinding is a very common problem experienced by our patients at our Brampton dental office. Teeth grinding can be triggered by several reasons such as stress, changes in the environment, movement disorders, periodic limb movements (PLM), and a general lack of muscle activity suppression (similar to sleep talking or sleepwalking).

Patients that are only experiencing symptoms of teeth grinding can be treated with a custom-fitted mouthguard. This can help protect your teeth from damage. However, if you also experience pain or jaw locking, it’s important to contact our Brampton dentist for a comprehensive dental examination. Our dental professionals will develop a personalized dental treatment plan to address your teeth grinding problem and protect your teeth, treat jaw pain, jaw locking and headaches that might be caused from teeth grinding.

What symptoms or side effects are associated with teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding which is also referred to as bruxism, typically causes excessive and uneven wear on the top surfaces of your teeth. Due to the wear, patients are more likely to have broken dental fillings and crowns as well as small cracks that might reach the nerve within their teeth. If this happens, patients may require a root canal treatment. As time passes, constant grinding can make the roots and attachment of a patient’s teeth loose and weak. This behaviour can result in tooth loss. There is also a connection between frequent teeth grinding and various TMJ disorders, along with headaches.

How to treat teeth grinding (bruxism)?

Our Brampton dentist can provide treatment for bruxism by starting off with a comprehensive dental evaluation in order to find and treat any underlying issues contributing to the teeth grinding.

Several patients have shown positive benefits by wearing custom made mouth guards. These mouth guards help protect the teeth from grinding damage and reduce discomfort caused with bruxism.
